Fred will be talking on the argumentative commitments speakers undertake to induce thought and consideration of a matter. He’ll discuss how a Gricean approach to speech acts helps elucidate the “normative terrain” utterances create, and walk through the example of Martin Luther King’s renowned “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”
